Biden Creates His First National Park Unit: Amache in Colorado
In a historic move, President Biden has bestowed the title of National Historic Site upon Amache, a former Japanese American internment camp located in Colorado. This momentous designation marks the first time an internment camp has been elevated to a National Park unit.
During World War II, Amache was home to over 10,000 Japanese Americans who were unjustly imprisoned due to their ethnicity. Today, the camp serves as a powerful reminder of this dark chapter in American history and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
As a National Historic Site, Amache will receive federal funding for preservation, education, and interpretation. This new recognition will allow countless visitors to learn about the camp’s tragic past and honor the experiences of those incarcerated there.
